This morning I was blasted with feces by our newest family member. Just as I lifted up his bum during a diaper change, a fire hydrant style release came my way. It nailed me in the chest and ran down the front of me. It was all over my shirt, jeans, foot and the floor. The most outrageous diaper event in my mothering history. A moment that will not soon be forgotten.
The other day, a friend of mine asked me whether the transition from one child to two or two to three was more difficult. I quickly answered one to two. Thus far, it had all seemed pretty underwhelming.
What I didn't realize at the time was that I hadn't actually been left alone with all of them for a very long period of time. Either Nahshon or my mom had been around to help me the entire time. So, Monday I considered changing my answer. The space that was left after the second child filled their share has been partially overtaking by the third. All I could think was that "this ride is never going to stop." I just keep reminding myself of my friends with four kids and those folks on TV with dozens.
I'm not saying that I'm completely overwhelmed. It is just a new level. It requires new strategies, planning ahead and being constantly purposeful. It is like any new season in life. There is another set of skills to develope, hone and implement. In these seasons I am always amazed at how well God equips us for what is to come. And how truly sufficient His grace is.
Liam had his first "it's easier to just give him a bath" diaper overflow. We were so proud! LOL!
I just had to take a moment to say what an amazing husband and father God has blessed me with. He has spent the last few days changing diapers, taking care of me, doing laundry, feeding the big kids and even giving Sydney a pedicure. He is "the best"!
I know it sounds crazy to be thankful for another week of pregnancy, but here are some things I have gotten to do that would not have happened with a newborn in the mix.
- Went to see Chicago with Nash at Chateau St. Michele. It is such a cool venue. If you've never been to a show there, you really should consider it next summer. Most of the seating is on the lawn (it's outdoors). You bring low-back chairs and your own dinner. Lots of folks had real dishes and a serious spread of amazing looking food. It seemed like only 20% of the songs were ones I knew, but free tickets cover a multitude of lameness :-).
- Went shoe shopping with Sydney for her dance class this fall. It will be a mix of tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, singing, acting and musical theatre. Yesterday she was tapping around the house in her leotard (from Auntie Jamie). It was awesome!
- Had a pedicure and haircut (Gia and Randa rock!). Hallelujah!
- Participated in the live draft for my fantasy football league. Seriously, it was the most fun! Did I mention that I won last year?
- Purchased nectarines at the Kirkland farmer's market. It's on Wednesdays 2-7pm. There is a stand at one end of the market that only sells peaches and nectarines. They are amazing!
- General good times with both of our currently-out-of-womb offspring.
So, although I cannot wait to meet our newest family member, find out if we have a boy/girl and be able to sleep on my stomach again, I am thankful for the fullness of life God has blessed me with this last week.
Our son has become absolutely hilarious! He suddenly has added so many words to his vocabulary and puts them together in some stellar combinations. For example:
- When he is told no, he now says, "Awwwwwwww. Why?" This he learned from his sister.
- The best was last week when he got ready to play me a song on his dad's old Casio keyboard. He likes to play the pre-set songs by pushing the number buttons and then the play button. But this day, he paused before he hit play, looked over at me with his finger on the button and asked, "Are you ready?" I was rolling! I said, "Yeah." He then proceeded to hit the button and play "How Deep is Your Love" by the Beegees. Too funny!
Just to set the blogosphere at ease...no baby yet. Our official due date is tomorrow. However, considering that our other two children were at least a week late, I have resolved myself to be patient. Thank you for your continued prayers. I am feeling great and sleeping well. God is good!
As a family, we have been in the midst, or on the verge, of major life events at this time of year quite often. Here are a few of the highlights...
2003 - Began the process of seeing Sydney come into the world. She will be five tomorrow!
2006 - Eight months pregnant with Terryn. He will be two in about a month.
2008 - Very pregnant with our third child. Sorry, no new photos. I am slightly larger than the previously posted photo. That's all that needs to be said. :-)
We are truly blessed!
